North Yorkshire contains four unitary authorities; York, Middlesbrough, Redcar and Cleveland and southern areas of Stockton-on-Tees which are all still part of North Yorkshire for ceremonial purposes. Geographically the county has a central valley with the Yorkshire Dales on the west and the North Yorkshire Moors to the east. The highest point is Whernside, on the Cumbrian border, at 2414 feet (736 m). Both the Moors and the Dales are very sparsely populated with the main towns in the central area and on the coast. In the central area, the major towns are Selby, Ripon, Harrogate, York, Thirsk, Northallerton and Catterick. Along the southern edge of the Moors are Scarborough, Pickering and Helmsley. On the coast are Whitby and Scarborough.

In North Yorkshire the main routes centre on York, Thirsk and Northallerton. The A19 runs centrally connecting Selby, York, Thirsk, Northallerton and Catterick. Running west from York, the A59 links to Harrogate and Skipton and east the A64 connects with Scarborough on the coast. From Scarborough the A170 runs along the southern edge of the Moors and connects the towns of Pickering, Helmsley and Thirsk and on to Ripon. Across the moors the A169 links Pickering with Whitby. The only major roads in the Dales are the A684 from Northallerton to Hawes and the B6265 from Ripon.
